Samoa and American Samoa refer to different territories in the Samoan Islands archipelago. The western half is called Samoa, an independent country made up of two larger islands (Upolu and Savaii) and several smaller ones. The eastern half is called American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States consisting of five islands and two coral atolls.
