The English adjective stolid is a back formation from the noun stolidity, which comes from Middle French stolidite and Latin 蝉迟辞濒颈诲颈迟腻蝉 (stem 蝉迟辞濒颈诲颈迟腻迟-) 鈥渂rutish insensibility, stupidity.鈥� 厂迟辞濒颈诲颈迟腻蝉 is a derivative of the adjective stolidus 鈥渄ull, stupid, brutish鈥� and is related to stultus 鈥渟tupid, dense, slow-witted.鈥� Samuel Johnson has the headword stolidity in his Dictionary (1755) but not stolid.
