Hyson is an adaptation of Cantonese heiceon, 鈥渂right spring.鈥� The hei element, meaning 鈥渂right, glorious,鈥� is a cognate of Mandarin 虫墨, while ceon, 鈥渟pring,鈥� is related to Mandarin 肠丑奴苍. It鈥檚 possible that hyson鈥檚 unusual spelling is the result of the term passing through Dutch or French on its way to English, in which it first appeared in the 1730s.
