Andragogy is usually used in contrast to pedagogy, the art or science of teaching. Andragogy was formed by replacing the ped- element, meaning 鈥渃hild,鈥� with the element andr-, meaning 鈥渕an, male,鈥� which comes from Ancient Greek 补苍岣梤, 鈥渕an.鈥� Andragogy is used to refer to the teaching of all adults鈥攖hough, a more gender-neutral term could be invented using the Ancient Greek form 谩苍迟丑谤艒辫辞蝉, 鈥渉uman, person.鈥� Andragogy was first recorded in English in the late 1920s.
