- Fartlek comes from a combination of the Swedish words fart, meaning “speed,” and lek, “play.”
- Fart is cognate with the English verb fare, meaning 鈥渢o go, travel,鈥� and lek may be related to English lark, 鈥渁 carefree adventure; to have fun.鈥� But it has a far more popular relative: LEGO, the name of a brand of interlocking plastic bricks, from Danish leg godt, meaning聽鈥渢o play well.鈥�
- Fartlek聽was first mentioned in English in the periodical聽Scholastic Coach聽in 1952.
