Circe lived on the island of Aeaea, known today as the Circeo Promontory, which is located in the Province of Latina, south of Rome.

They had come to Aeaea, the realm of Circe, a most beautiful and most dangerous witch.

Once exiled to the island of Aeaea, Circe is haunted by stories of Scylla’s exploits until, eventually, she must face the monster she created — and the death she has wrought.

Among nasty women, the witch of Aeaea has held a place of prominence since Homer first sang of her wiles.

He doesn’t arrive on Aeaea until more than halfway through the novel, but then Miller plays their verbal sparring with a delightful mix of wit and lust.
