A police complaint said that the company, Ajanta Manufacturing, had made an “irresponsible and careless gesture” by reopening the bridge before the local authorities had certified it.

When the bridge reopened last week, Ajanta’s chairman, Jaysukhbhai Patel, held a function to mark the occasion.

Sandeepsinh Zala, a top official in the Morbi municipal government, said that Ajanta had failed to inform the government of its plans to reopen, so no safety audit was conducted.
