His mother died when he was a child, and his father ran a furniture store while periodically hosting Albizu Campos at the family home.

The Puerto Rican revolutionary Pedro Albizu Campos once said, “Young people have a duty to defend their country with weapons of knowledge.”

But at Wesleyan, he moved into La Casa de Albizu Campos, a house for Latino students named for a Puerto Rican nationalist, and honed his voice.

Today, the retiree has converted his basement into a “martyr’s museum,” with newspaper photos of rebels’ bullet-riddled bodies and paintings of nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos.
