Other demonstrations have taken place in Oran, the country’s second most important city, and in the northern towns of Akbou and Annaba.

Arriving in Annaba the next morning, we paid a visit to the reigning champion sheep in what used to be the Jewish quarter.

We are overlooking Sidi Salem, a rundown suburb of the Algerian port of Annaba.

Covering a distance of 20,000km, it enters the sea at Marseilles and makes landfall in Annaba in 15 other countries including Sri Lanka, Thailand and India.

In early July, it headed for the port of Annaba on the northeastern tip of Algeria, according to AIS Live ship tracking data based on satellite signals sent from the vessel itself.
