A number of studies have pointed out that depression and anxiety disorders are growing among Chinese people, and Prof Fang believes the country's economic slowdown, high unemployment and Covid lockdowns have played a role.

"The underlying mechanisms that cause dartitis are the same things that cause any other anxiety disorder," she said.

However, the NHS says sometimes it is diagnosed in adults, although symptoms may improve as people get older, and there can be extra problems, such as sleep and anxiety disorders.

It would likely be useful for the more than 40 million adults in the U.S, who, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suffer from an anxiety disorder.
