A librarian in Alexandria, Egypt, Aristophanes of Byzantium, thought the system could stand improving.

Among those who furthered the exact study of his text, and of whose work some traces remain in the extant scholia, were Aristophanes of Byzantium, Callistratus, Apollodorus of Tarsus, Timachidas, and pre-eminently Didymus; probably also Crates of Pergamum and Aristarchus.

ARISTOPHANES, of Byzantium, Greek critic and grammarian, was born about 257 B.C.

He settled early in Alexandria, where he studied under Aristophanes of Byzantium, whom he succeeded as librarian of the museum.

He was one of the pupils of Aristophanes of Byzantium, who were distinctively called Aristophanei.
