As the Ausable River churns through a sandstone chasm carved out of 500-million-year-old rock, the via ferrata, 12 miles south of Plattsburgh, N.Y., leads climbers back and forth across the water on six suspension bridges interspersed with traverses along the ravine’s narrow ledges.

The 7,000-acre reserve, exclusive Ausable Club, is private land accessible to the public under a longstanding easement.

Reservations will be required starting May 1 for the 70 parking spots at the Ausable Mountain Reserve lot for access to trails across the reserve’s 7,000 acres.

Some are on iconic waterways such as the AuSable, Sturgeon, Manistique and Rapid rivers and the Upper Peninsula’s Lake Gogebic.

And that’s setting the stage for some pretty cool phenomena — like this ice jam on the Ausable River in Au Sable Forks, located in upstate New York.
