Now the Trump administration is extending its metal tariffs, from basic steel and aluminum to finished metal products — car bumpers, nails, wires and the like — from certain countries, again citing “national security.”

Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo noted at a press conference Tuesday that more than two years ago Mexico imposed safeguard tariffs of 15% on basic steel products such as slab from countries with which it doesn’t have free-trade agreements.

Basic steel imports should increase in costs from both the lower dollar and import tariff.

The associations said that their member companies employed more than one million Americans, compared with just 80,000 jobs in basic steel production.
