A Belgium court has ordered the government to pay reparations to five mixed-race women who were forcibly removed from their families in the colonial-era Belgian Congo.

Henri Lopes was born on Sept. 12, 1937, in what was then Léopoldville, later Kinshasa, the capital of what was then the Belgian Congo.

Born in South Africa in 1921 to a French father and British mother, Phyllis was orphaned at the age of four and went to live with an uncle in Jadotville in the Belgian Congo.

Nine of Belgium’s 23 richest families still trace their fortunes to Belgian Congo, one survey found.

“The United States has only very poor ores of uranium in moderate quantities,” Mr. Einstein wrote, noting that “the most important source of uranium is Belgian Congo.”
