The new hospital is expected to have an admission unit, early pregnancy department and an active birthing centre with 10 dedicated rooms for mothers who choose midwifery-led care.

Since October it said a number of additional midwifery staff had been taken on, and plans are in place to reinstate the birthing centre at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, as well as the home birth service, both of which were suspended in 2021.

The sisters set up a birthing centre together but their ethics are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Bath's Royal United hospital said births at Frome Birthing Centre have been temporarily suspended because safe transfer to hospital can not be guaranteed if it is required.
