A proposed change to banking rules will increase significantly the amount of savers' money that is protected when a bank or building society goes under.

A home affordability index report published by Skipton Group building society found six out of the 10 least affordable areas of Britain were in Wales.

The Nationwide, the UK's largest building society, described the money as a "thank you" to its members, at a cost of £600m.

The majority of banks and building societies require EWS1 certificates when deciding whether to lend money on flats in apartment blocks.

The consumer group Which? said that banks and building societies have closed 6,266 branches since January 2015, at a rate of around 53 each month.
