Published in Child Psychiatry and Human Development, a research team led by the University of Minnesota Medical School found that Creativity Camp, a two-week arts intervention delivered as a day camp, had a positive impact on mental health and well-being in adolescents with depression.

Byatt has attempted to address this chasm through setting up the Lifeline for Moms program and the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Moms, which has been rolled out across 30 states and assists patients, psychiatrists, and obstetricians alike.

Lisa Cromer, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at TU and a volunteer child psychiatry faculty member at OU-Tulsa, led development of the treatment because of a growing recognition in the field that nightmares should be addressed as a singular problem rather than a symptom of another problem.

Pate said child psychiatry, in particular, is an area where more specialists are needed.

Psychiatrist Bruce Perry, who has done extensive research in child psychiatry, brain development and the impacts of trauma, recommends “6 R’s” that are essential to trauma-informed classroom practices: relational, relevant, respectful, rhythmic, repetitive and rewarding.
