A Western Australian teenager was charged on Wednesday after allegedly threatening to launch a Christchurch massacre-inspired attack on a Sydney mosque.

In 2019, 51 people were murdered at two mass shootings in mosques in Christchurch.

On Friday an Emirates plane was reportedly informed about the exercise by Chinese authorities, while it was still in the air as it flew from Sydney to Christchurch.

They said a 49-year-old man and 42-year-old woman, both from Christchurch, have also been arrested, on suspicion of assisting an offender, and are in custody.

The one-way flight time between Christchurch and Melbourne usually takes less than four hours.
