Chauvinistic Catholics were prominent in Buckley's founding of postwar conservatism; he made great efforts to ensure everyone knew he followed the Church of Rome.

Those included condemnation of just the sort of graven imagery his son would later master for the Church of Rome and its royal cohorts in Habsburg Spain.

He preferred to present his evidence and let the observations speak for themselves, convinced that sooner rather than later even the Church of Rome would have to accept the implications.

And he challenged the entire church, the Church of Rome.

Nonetheless, the Church leader, Patriarch Ilia, had welcomed Pope Francis on Friday as his "dear brother" and toasted him saying "May the Lord bless the Catholic Church of Rome".
