Benzene is a colourless or light-yellow liquid with a sweet smell that can evaporate very quickly.

The colourless and odourless substance is often used in bootleg alcohol, and medical experts suggest say drinking as little as 25ml of it can be fatal.

Methanol - which is commonly found in industrial and household products such as paint thinners - is a colourless chemical substance sometimes used in bootleg alcohol.

Theirs were the first deaths suspected to be caused by methanol, a toxic, flavourless and colourless substance commonly added to bootleg alcohol.

"Methanol is like the alcohol in our drinks – colourless and odourless – but its impact on humans can be deadly," he explained.
