The cost of the event has been estimated as approximately £114m, a total that includes all Games costs, including security as a well as a contingency fund.

But Palo Alto Mayor Greer Stone responded that the donation comes from the City Council’s contingency fund, which has $77,000 left to spend.

"During an Extreme Republican Shutdown, women and children who count on WIC would soon start being turned away at grocery store counters, with a federal contingency fund drying up after just a few days and many states left with limited WIC funds to operate the program," the statement read.

The project has a $450 million budget, with a $50 million contingency fund.
