Reports claimed that the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was understaffed at the time of the crash but President Donald Trump rushed to blame the incident on diversity initiatives.

After takeoff, the pilot transmitted a signal to the control tower for an “immediate landing” and the tower controller asked whether he could make a left turn, according to the report.

According to an internal report reviewed by The New York Times, staffing at the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport was “not normal” during the fatal crash.

At about 08:57 local time, three minutes after pilots made contact with the airport, the control tower advised the crew to be cautious of "bird activity".
