Published in the journal Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments, a new study reveals rare whitefly insect fossils have been found in Miocene age crater lake sediments at Hindon Maar, near Dunedin.

A short distance away I can see the rim of the volcano's crater lake, while to the south steam vents and mud pools bubble away.

"I have planted trees all over the world in countries I have visited, including Uganda, Poland, the UK, Crater Lake in the USA, Zanzibar, Morocco and Zambia," Ellyanne says, adding: "I have planted the most trees here in Kenya."

Some are well-known cautionary tales like that of Timothy Treadwell, the bear enthusiast who lived among grizzlies for 13 years before being mauled to death by one of them, while others are pure true crime, like the still-unsolved Crater Lake murders.

Crater Lake Hospitality, a subsidiary of Philadelphia-based Aramark, is contracted through 2030 to run concessions such as food and lodging.
