Dean admitted at an earlier hearing to nine counts of the theft of drugs, including cyclizine, ondansetron, propofol, midazolam and morphine.

Only one, Xonvea, is permitted in Britain for use in pregnancy - but "off-label" alternatives, such as cyclizine, prochlorperazine and ondansetron, are also regularly prescribed and considered safe by doctors who treat the condition.

He was not given water or food but instead put on a driver syringe containing diamorphine, midazolam and cyclizine.

The two doctors are also searching for a physiological treatment for the disorder; in a small pilot program, they have begun to study the effect of cyclizine, a motion-sickness drug, on the reading ability of dyslexic children.
