Since 2006, the Hagans have been raising dorper and katahdin breeds to help with mowing.

In between campfires and organic lunches, however, there’s a lot to be done on a working farm that includes Scottish Highland cattle, Dorper sheep, chickens, ducks, dogs, and bees from rescued hives — not to mention the volunteer cast of coyotes, snakes, mountain lions, gophers, slugs and egrets.

Every morning, and sometimes in the afternoons, Massa and Krach move an electric fence to cover a different 6,000- to 8,000-square foot area, guiding 100 Dorper sheep and lambs to a new patch of orchard.

Integrating heritage animal breeds — Dorper sheep, Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs, and Berkshire pigs — has been an important way to improve the farm’s ecological footprint as well.
