The Dutch West India Company had a monopoly on trade in the Dutch West Indies and was also given jurisdiction over the Atlantic slave trade by the then Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The exhibition, spread across 15 structures, walks visitors through a slave’s journey from Africa to the big port of Curaçao, where Dutch businessmen in the Dutch West Indies Company traded slaves, alongside spices and cheese, with the Spanish, Portuguese, French and other plantation owners.

But the Dutch West Indies Company told Stuyvesant that business was business and Jews should remain as long as they could contribute to the outpost’s commercial well-being.

It rains very little in the Dutch West Indies unless there is a hurricane, and water from the few wells has a heavy salt content.

The law covered the Dutch West Indies, and the precedent was followed in Siam; and in the Transvaal and Orange State the Dutch law continued after they had become English colonies.
