The male bear, now known as BB-12, was captured last week in the western Santa Monica Mountains, where National Park Service biologists attached an ear tag and GPS radio collar to the 210-pound animal, according to an NPS news release.

Colleagues then took the kittens a short distance away and did a workup — which involves a physical exam, where body measurements are recorded, and attaching an ear tag — before the mother returned.

"It's very friendly, but it doesn't have an identifying ear tag so we don't know who it belongs to," a spokeswoman said.

The captured animals are marked with a microchip and ear tag and released.

For now, the department will undertake a “trap, tag, haze” campaign during which bears will be captured, tagged with an ear tag and released using hazing methods such as air horns and paintball guns to instill a healthy fear of humans.
