A migrant has died after trying to cross the English Channel in an overloaded boat, a day after another person died attempting the journey.

Gzim, who wished to remain anonymous, was one of more than 12,600 Albanians who made the trip to the UK by small boat in 2022 - the peak year for English Channel migrant crossings.

The Home Office is launching an advertising campaign in Iraq to try to deter people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.

The influx was such that a huge part of London's East End became known as "weaver town" as it transformed into a centre for the trade, led by migrants from across the English Channel.

Last year was the deadliest for small boats crossing the English Channel, with an estimated 78 people having died attempting the journey.
