Two years later, Mantz arrived, drawn partly by coach Ed Eyestone, who had run two Olympic marathons himself.

Eyestone can’t recall the moment when he saw something click between the runners, but their connection quickly became clear.

While there is a natural competitiveness among elite runners, Mantz and Young were “comfortable enough with one another that the ego does not get in the way of workouts,” Eyestone said.

Mantz and Young were teammates at BYU and are trained by two-time Olympic marathoner Ed Eyestone.

MollyPatt Eyestone, a spokesperson for Stormont Vail Health, said patient volume began increasing Friday and extra staff was brought in to help throughout the weekend.
