The operation prevents pregnancy by blocking a woman's fallopian tubes and is sometimes referred to as "getting your tubes tied".

The surgery included the removal of her spleen, gallbladder, appendix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, belly button, greater and lesser omentum - which connect the stomach and duodenum to other abdominal organs - and part of her liver, as well as the scraping of her diaphragm and pelvis.

However, in an ectopic pregnancy the egg implants elsewhere, usually in the fallopian tubes that connect the ovaries to the womb.

It's not completely clear why they happen, although inflammation and scar tissue in the fallopian tubes can increase the risk.

Most ovarian cancer starts in the fallopian tubes, so by the time it gets to the ovaries, it may have already spread elsewhere too.
