Speaking after his death, Mr Richard's family paid tribute to a "much-loved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and an all-round family man".

"A much-loved family man, a pillar of the community, has lost his life," he said.

But I pride myself on the fact that I’m a family man, so it’s always hard to leave again.

"I'm a quiet family man who just gets on with life and tries to help others rather than hinder," he tells me.

“As much as he was a really brilliant and unique maverick kind of lawyer, he was such a family man — playful, silly, loving.”
