In his report, written 10 days after the Sir Galahad was attacked, Capt Roberts said: "The LCU returned to pick up the Welsh Guards to take them around to Bluff Cove as previously arranged, however it was commandeered… to take three Land Rovers, four trailers, plus some of his field ambulance to Fitzroy settlement".

Nine of the dead were civilians, including two doctors who it said had been "providing critically needed services to civilians in Tripoli. One doctor was reportedly killed while working as part of a field ambulance service".

British military records show that Duffy died on April 23, 1915, from his wounds in a Canadian field ambulance.

Rumours circulated that the ship had been carrying munitions, but this is now understood to relate to the rifles carried by some ambulance drivers of the field ambulance unit to defend their patients, which was permitted.

His uncle was a doctor with the 2/12 Field Ambulance unit.
