Officials at the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, referred to as PETA, say the photos included in the report show lions suffering from flystrike.

Zoo in Wynnewood, Okla., after a whistleblower leaked images of lions there that appeared to be suffering from a skin-eating condition called flystrike.

“The second is going to be flystrike … If wool stays on the sheep for a longer period of time, we’re going to see an increased rate.”

The unburied carcasses were attracting flies, and those flies contributed to a condition called flystrike afflicting several animals, the inspectors found.

The flystrike condition occurs when flies bite animals and lay eggs -- and then the hatching maggots gnaw away at their skin.
