The collection from the late California Sen. Dianne Feinstein that goes to auction in Los Angeles in October includes a freshwater pearl necklace designed for Tiffany & Co. by Paloma Picasso, the daughter of Pablo Picasso.

Weighing 43.6 grains, it is the largest freshwater pearl found in Scotland in modern history, although it is smaller than the Kellie Pearl which was discovered in the 1540s and is set in the Scottish Crown.

The largest Scottish freshwater pearl found in living memory is being auctioned, nearly six decades after its discovery.

It will also protect and promote strongholds of species like freshwater pearl mussels, pine marten and curlew.

Bill Abernethy was one of the Scotland’s last professional pearl fishers, and was responsible for finding Scotland’s largest freshwater pearl in living memory – the Abernethy pearl, which was revealed to the world in the 1960s.
