The firearms included an unloaded Remington Nylon 66 .22 caliber rifle, an unloaded Connecticut Valley Arms .50 caliber muzzle-loader, a loaded Mossberg .410 caliber shotgun and a Gamo pellet gun.

Expense remains the biggest obstacle, said Scott Gamo, environmental services manager at the Wyoming transportation department.

Witnesses described the attackers as young Oromos from neighboring areas and the victims as members of the small Dorze, Gamo and Wolaita ethnic groups.

“It’s great to get local people involved, but excavations are slow and expensive,” said Emilio Gamo, one of Caraca’s archaeologists.

The tool for this job will be a gun — preferably one called the Gamo Whisper Silent Cat Air Rifle, which fires pellets at supersonic speeds and comes equipped with a suppressor.
