Syed was convicted in the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee and sentenced to life in prison.

Syed was initially convicted for Hae Min Lee’s murder in 2000, a trial which the podcast “Serial” covered, detailing the case and poking holes in the evidence brought against Syed, then the ex-boyfriend of Lee.

Syed was cleared of all charges in 2022, after prosecutors said he had been wrongfully convicted of strangling and killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

Hae Min Lee's brother, Young Lee, said in 2022 that he wished to travel from California to attend the hearing that freed Syed, but he could not on short notice.

Syed and Hae Min Lee were classmates in high school in Baltimore County, Maryland when Lee disappeared in January 1999.
