My editor appreciated the authenticity right from the start, including the nuanced Hawaiian Pidgin English some of my characters speak, and the value-added glossary I provided at the end.

Trying to free herself, she began to write in Hawaiian pidgin, a language she both grew up surrounded by and was told by others — including her mother — to avoid out in the world.

This leaves many—such as speakers of African American English, Hawaiian Pidgin, and Spanglish—struggling to communicate with Siri, Alexa, and service bots.

Instead of standard English, everyone spoke Hawaiian Pidgin, a language mash-up created by Hawaiians and early Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and American immigrants.

The name, Mo’ Bettahs, is Hawaiian Pidgin, a Creole language from the plantations.
