"In the face of a terrible virus that could have been even worse, measures of public health and social protection took a back seat to the needs of short-term profit in country after country. Lockdowns were too late and too little and temporarily improved income support and tenant protections were cast aside as rapidly as possible."

The guidelines outline how the money will be spent — including to create and preserve affordable housing through a new “social housing” model, rental assistance, income support for seniors and eviction defense.

About $21 million will go toward programs to help support renters — like income support for rent-burdened seniors and people with disabilities and eviction defense.

If families receive other benefits like income support, jobseeker's allowance, or employment and support allowance they should also be eligible.

Under the new rules, WFP will be paid only to over-65s who are receiving one of seven benefits: pension credit, universal credit, income-related employment and support allowance, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income support, child tax credit or working tax credit.
