Like a psychologist's inkblot test, it was possible to look at England's work, draw on different aspects and reach very different conclusions.

The three may have combined to produce post-sunset skies on the western horizon that seemed to represent a sort of meteorological inkblot test.

The Rorschach inkblot test was in use, as were the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, a 567-item questionnaire, and the Thematic Apperception Test, developed by the Harvard psychologist Henry Murray.

“It’s an inkblot test. They found something and said, ‘It sort of reminds me of a sponge.’”

“She’s found some wiggles in a rock, performed a Rorschach inkblot test on them, and said, ‘They sort of vaguely remind me of a sponge,’” he says.
