She further distinguished herself from other vendors by packaging and labeling her more unusual offerings, a godsend to head-scratching grocery store clerks as well as to consumers who might not know how to serve jicama, or how to slice into a kiwano.

She craved the jelly-meat of the bright yellow horned melon, called “kiwano.”

Among the plants are bananas, passion fruit, papaya, pomegranate, oranges, kiwis and Kiwano melons.

The slices of pineapple guava and “baby pineapple” are OK but nothing special, flavorwise; the horned kiwano melons look spectacular but are, as always, utterly insipid; and the rambutan, the hairy cousins of lychees, look weird and are pleasantly sweet.

Nutrition: A cup of kiwano melon has almost as much protein as one tablespoon of peanut butter, plus vitamin C, iron, potassium and lesser amounts of phosphorous, zinc, magnesium, calcium and copper.
