On the flip side, Nesmith was a throwback wanting to authentically emulate his heroes: artists such as Hank Williams, Dylan and Johnny Cash, who, as he wrote on the back cover of the 1970 album “Magnetic South,” were “free from euphemisms alive with their own emotions.”

Moving into new musical territory, Mr. Nesmith recorded three country rock albums with the First National Band, which struggled to build a following but scored a Top 40 hit with “Joanne,” from their 1970 debut album, “Magnetic South.”

Plans to remodel the Astro Theatre on College Ave. were scrapped by Magnetic South Brewing earlier this year in favor of a larger outfit in Anderson County.

O’Brady’s culminating effort joined some of the most remarkable achievements in polar history, including expeditions led by Norway’s Roald Amundsen and by Robert Falcon Scott of England, who battled Amundsen to become the first to reach the magnetic South Pole.
