It’s not clear why this changed, but it shows a clear physiological effect of traffic noise, Mariette says.

“I’ve never had such clear results in any experiments,” Mariette says.

Mylene Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with zebra finches held in an aviary on campus in Melbourne, Australia.

Those details are not in her area of expertise, but Mariette says she would like to conduct other experiments to learn what aspects of noise are harmful.

“We are not aware of the danger and the impact we’re having on the environment by the noise we produce,” Mariette says.
