Populism is one of the most misunderstood, misused and question-begging political descriptors in use today.

They say police have "broad powers to deal with offences where unnecessary suffering and injury is inflicted on wildlife, including cases involving the misuse of catapults".

Suppressing studies because of concerns about how they might be misused sets a dangerous precedent.

The law had in fact recently been toughened – by the very politicians who were now complaining about its application – to make the penalty for misuse of public funds very severe indeed.

That would leave her free to run in 2027, though with the handicap of a conviction for misuse of public money.
