“The condition of myopia or nearsightedness is caused by the fact that the eye is too long,” says Carolyn Lederman, an ophthalmologist based in Purchase, New York.

Some research suggests that sunlight even helps the eyes to develop properly in the first place, and that a lack of sunlight in childhood might lead to nearsightedness.

The study found that seniors with all forms of nearsightedness, farsightedness and impaired sensitivity to visual contrasts had a higher prevalence of dementia than those without eye problems.
