Ibrahim Dia, a 38-year-old who owns a cleaning company in the Mauritanian city of Nouadhibou, said his brother left the country in June, following the Nicaragua trip he’d seen countless others take in recent months.

In Nouadhibou, he hopes to find work in the fishing industry.

So like an increasing number of his neighbours, Sidi has plans to migrate to the coastal city of Nouadhibou, where the ocean breeze keeps the city cooler.

One survivor was found during a rescue operation by Mauritania’s coast guard and brought to Nouadhibou, the U.N. agencies for migration and refugees said.
