Two must-see shows: Charles Gaines’ “Numbers and Trees, The Tanzania Baobabs,” on view until May 24 at Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood, showcasing new Plexiglas works based on photographs of baobab trees that the artist shot during a trip to Tanzania in 2023, and David Hammons’ “Concerto in Black and Blue,” on view until June 1 at Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles, presented for the first time since its debut over 20 years ago.

The premise for the party is simple: members of the 100-year-old society set up their personal telescopes; community members can circle through and gaze at whatever is on view that night.

Some of the stills from the artists’ films are also on view on billboards throughout the city, in collaboration with Save Art Space.

Among the more startling objects on view is a late 4th century BC bronze helmet that takes the unmistakable form of the conical glans of a human penis.

For both her first solo museum show, “Calida Rawles: Away with the Tides,” on view now through Feb. 2 at the Pérez, and Lehmann Maupin’s presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach, running Friday through Sunday, Rawles painted portraits of Overtown residents based on photo sessions in the water.
