Georges took over the restaurant in 1964 along with his mother, Paulette, before taking full control four years later at the age of just 25.

“The threats are real and it feels like they’re reinforced almost daily,” said Paulette Granberry Russell, president of the National Assn. of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.

He had received threats before his death relating to medical coverage, according to his widow, Paulette Thompson, but a motive for his killing has not been suggested by prosecutors.

"There had been some threats," Paulette Thompson said.
