Pilot officer Anderson, born in Wakefield, survived the Dambusters raid, but was also killed months later during an attack on the German city of Mannheim.

Bone fragments from Pilot Officer Alfred Milne and Sgt Eric Stubbs, who died in 1944, were found in Bransdale, North Yorkshire, in March 2020.

The Pilot Officer, who has been raising funds online for the armed forces charity, said he had started his challenge during lockdown, inspired by Capt Sir Tom Moore.

The pilot officer was briefly hidden by Dutch farmers, before being captured while on a tram.

“You look lost,” he said, extending a hand and introducing himself as Jan Loos, a retired navy pilot officer.
