The new methods were used to engineer the pyrochlore nanocrystal, a special type of lattice that could eventually function as an optical metamaterial, "a special type of material that only transmits certain wavelengths of light," Sulc says.

Petr Šulc of Arizona State University and TUM presents a theoretical framework for designing diverse crystalline lattices from patchy colloids, and experimentally demonstrates the method by utilizing DNA origami building blocks to form a pyrochlore lattice, which potentially also could be used for photonic applications.

One part copper, two parts vanadium and four parts sulfur, the alloy features a 3D pyrochlore lattice consisting of corner-sharing tetrahedra.

Rice theoretical physicist and study co-corresponding author Qimiao Si, whose research group identified the copper-vanadium alloy and its pyrochlore crystal structure as being a possible host for combined frustration effects from geometry and strong electron interactions, likened the discovery to finding a new continent.
