The airline apologized for the “extremely painful decision” but said “significant financial pressures” made it necessary to temporarily halt operations pending shareholder restructuring and recapitalization of the company.

Proterra said in a statement Monday that its bankruptcy was made “in an effort to strengthen its financial position through a recapitalization or going-concern sale.”

It also said it is “actively working” with lenders to pay the delinquent property taxes “as part of a larger recapitalization and loan extension plan.”
